Welcome back to the Nintendo Download, the once weekly, now whenever I feel like it, feature covering Nintendo’s downloadable offerings.

Nintendo has finally joined the preceding century and begun offering downloadable demos of 3DS retail games. nintendogs + cats, Resident Evil: Revelations, Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater 3D are available now.

Far more terrific than that, or terrifying, rather, is the availability of Super Mario Bros. on the 3DS’s eShop. That’s right, Nintendo is now clogging up its comically thin Virtual Console bandwidth with already-available-on-Wii NES games.

More horrifying yet, the absence of any sort of coordination between Nintendo’s various stores means that those who have already bought Mario on Wii will just have to pay for it again if they want to play it on 3DS.

There is some good in this, the Ambassador version of Super Mario Bros. can now be updated to include the regular 3DS Virtual Console game features.
